1991–2002: Early work

At the age of 17, Shetty started his career as an assistant director on Phool Aur Kaante, the debut movie of Ajay Devgn. He later collaborated with Ajay Devgn on the films Suhaag, Haqeeqat, and Zulmi. In Suhaag, he served as Akshay Kumar’s body duplicate. He later appeared in the Devgn-starring films Raju Chacha, Hindustan Ki Kasam, and Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha.

2003–2009: Directorial debut and breakthrough

Before becoming famous in 2006 for directing the first episode of Devgn’s classic comedy series Golmaal, which became his first smash, Shetty made his directorial debut in 2003 with Zameen, a film with an average box office performance starring Ajay Devgn. His next two films, the comedic thriller Sunday and the popular Golmaal Returns prequel, both starring Ajay Devgn, were theatrically released in 2008 and 2009, respectively.

2010–present: Commercial success

Golmaal 3, the third installment in the Golmaal series, which debuted in theatres in 2010 and once again starred Ajay Devgn, became director Shetty’s first and surprisingly successful blockbuster, breaking the 100 Crore Club nationally. In order to continue working with Devgn, Shetty started his Cop Universe in 2011 with the action movie Singham, in which Devgn played a police inspector fighting against corruption. Two years later, in 2012, he directed the comedy Bol Bachchan, which also starred Abhishek Bachchan. Both movies were huge hits and broke the 100 Crore Club domestically.
